Abstract:
Household Solid Waste Management has become problematic in urban areas especially
in developing countries like Sri Lanka due to increased waste generation and financial
constraints. The study was conducted to Existing realities and sustainable pathways for
household waste management in Batticaoa, Municipal Counc 1l area. Hence, aims of the
study to explore the current status of household waste disposal and waste collection
service practices and to explore the 7R methodology practiced in Batticaloa, Municipal
Council area. To find out the household waste management practices in Batticaloa,
Municipal Council area the questionnaire survey was carried out among 300
Household. This study was under taken 9 Public Health Inspector (PHI) division in
Batticaloa, Municipal Council area. Collected data were analyzed using Statistical
Package for Social Science (SPSS 22.0 Version) through Univariate analysis.
According to the findings Municipal Council area, the widely used disposal method
practiced by sample households for five waste categories [Organic (67.7%),plastic and
Polythene (64.33), Cardboard and Paper (57%), Glass (73.33%) and Metal (72%)l is
handling it over to Municipal Council waste collection and also composting, burning
and dump in public place are used for disposal by household. In Municipal Council area
some of areas don't have collection service of MC. The Municipal Council mostly
follow door to door mode of collection, follow twice a week frequency and morning
time collection and also some areas they follow irregular collection frequency and
Reduce and Reuse, Recycle, Recovery, Rethink, Renovation and Regulation practiced
low, level in Batticaloa, Municipal Council area. Because of have no awareness,
training, facilities and Knowledge regarding 7R waste management practices. Finalty
the researcher suggest some recommendations to improve waste management practices
to Batticaloa, Municipal Council.
